According to research, the modern lifestyle and the stress that it causes plays a vital role influencing mental well-being, brain wellness and overall health.1 Memory loss and brain power constitute a common concern among people especially as they age. Based on statistics, neurological disorders were the leading cause of disability adjusted life years (DALYs) (276 million) and the second leading cause of death (9 million) globally in 2016. Stroke, migraine, Alzheimer and other dementias, and meningitis are the largest contributors to neurological DALYs.2 From the age of 25 years onwards, about one in four adults will have a stroke in their lifetime,3 and approximately 50 million people worldwide were living with dementia in 2018, with the number is predicted to triple to 152 million by 2050.4
Research has shown that sage extract has a significant impact on multiple pathways that support brain health and performance. The genus Salvia (sage) is the largest genus of plants in the Lamiaceae family, comprising over 900 species distributed throughout the world. Because of its rich array of chemical constituents, plants of genus Salvia can influence multiple physiological pathways (Figure 1).5
Sibelius™: Sage is a unique and specific extract of the sage species Salvia officinalis. Sibelius™: Sage extract is derived from a non-GMO certified European herb source. All production, including harvesting, is carried out accordingly to defined protocols with full traceability of the crop at every stage of production.
Sibelius™: Sage has a unique profile when analyzed by NMR spectroscopy. The chemical fingerprint of the extract can in fact be differentiated from other sources. This means different varieties of Salvia officinalis grown under the same conditions, and even the same variety of S. officinalis grown at the same location but harvested at a different time do not present the same activity under analysis.
There are multiple clinical studies substantiating the safety and efficacy of Sibelius™: Sage. One study completed with 20 healthy volunteers (65-90-year-old) taking either 167mg or 333mg showed a significant improvement in cognitive performance within 1 hour of treatment. This included the improvement of secondary memory, recognition, and recall, accuracy, and speed of attention. Another recent study found some similar results for Sibelius™: Sage extract in young adults. The study was a randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled trial with a total of 72-participants ages 12-14 and 18-25. Participants took either placebo, 150mg, or 300mg single dose. The results showed significant effects on immediate word recall, supporting improvements in secondary memory as seen for the older adults.
