Dr Gessica Serra

BSc Hons, MSc Hons, PhD (University of Cagliari, Italy)

Gessica holds a BSc in Experimental Biology, a MSc in Experimental and Applied Biology (Food and Health) and a PhD in Toxicology of Food and Environment from the University of Cagliari, Italy.

It was during her MSc research project that she started to explore the beneficial effects of dietary polyphenols, biologically active compounds in plant-based foods. Her research in the field continued during her PhD, done in collaboration with the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Reading, where she investigated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of food bioactives on intestinal and immune cells focusing on their molecular mechanisms of action.

Before joining Sibelius, she worked as Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the University of Reading investigating the role of dietary polyphenols in vivo and their importance for healthy ageing and chronic disease prevention, focusing on human cardiovascular and brain health.
